Career Opportunity: Associate Organist

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a diverse, large, and vibrant downtown parish in the Diocese of Atlanta, seeks a full-time Associate Organist. St. Luke’s is known as an active parish for care and service, an awareness and commitment to the marginalized in the City of Atlanta and possessing a music program of extraordinary excellence. In 2023, Music at St. Luke’s made a commitment to annually commission music by underpresented composers for the Episcopal Church. Recent commissions include new works by David Hurd, Texu Kim, Dorothy Papadakos, and Marty Wheeler Burnett. The parish hosts an annual chorister festival and was honored to host the 2024-25 Gerre Hancock Intern in Church Music in partnership with the Association of Anglican Musicians. In 2026, St. Luke’s will host the opening Eucharist and other events for the Association of Anglican Musicians’ Annual Conference.

The ideal candidate should be a consummate conductor, organist and service player, possess superior skills in hymn playing, choral accompaniment, liturgical improvisation, and organ repertory. In addition to sharing music leadership for a robust liturgical schedule, the selected candidate will collaborate with St. Luke’s Associate Director of Music for Children and Youth in support of the parish’s RSCM-affiliated chorister program totaling 65 children and youth. The Adult Choir totals 45 with 11 professional staff singers. The Associate Organist reports to the Director of Music in the leadership, planning, administration and promotion of all areas of music at St. Luke’s.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in organ playing for liturgies and special services of the liturgical year, except for such time off as outlined in the Letter of Agreement
  • Prepare accompaniments, hymns, psalms, service music, and voluntaries for choral services and concerts
  • Attend weekly staff meeting
  • Accompany weekly Schola and Adult Choir rehearsals
  • Assist conducting choirs
  • Annually present one full-length recital on the Alston Memorial Organ
  • Assist in the maintenance of the choral library
  • Maintain a log of organ maintenance for the Alston Memorial Organ
  • Submit materials for service leaflets in a timely manner
  • Service as a substitute for the Director of Music at weddings and funerals for additional compensation
  • Lead Adult Choir rehearsals in the absence of the Director of Music
  • Assist in the planning and organization of the Music at St. Luke’s Series
  • Maintain a collaborative and engaging presence as a full-time member of St. Luke’s professional staff

Education and Qualifications

Candidates must:

  • hold an undergraduate degree in organ performance or sacred music (with organ as primary instrument), or equivalent professional experience
  • possess an advanced level of proficiency in organ repertoire and choral accompaniment
  • demonstrate proficiency in sight-reading
  • possess good oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills
  • be committed to ongoing professional development

St. Luke's instruments include the Alston Memorial Organ, a 90-rank Austin organ with 8 divisions, a 5-manual chancel console, and 2-manual gallery console, handbells, three Steinway grand pianos, and a harpsichord built by Richard Kingston.
