Lent

Early Christians observed “a season of penitence and fasting” in preparation for the Paschal feast. Over time, this brief fast expanded into the forty days of Lent, reflecting Christ’s fasting in the wilderness. The season became especially important for those preparing for baptism and for those being restored to the Church.

In the Western Church, Lent extends from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, with the final three days forming the sacred Triduum. Today, Lent remains a time of preparation and renewal, inviting all Christians to self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting, and reflection on God’s Word (BCP, p. 265).
